Moritz Lindur (b. Köln, DE, 1993) is at the forefront of an emerging generation of Berlin based artists. Moritz did not arrive to his current position via the traditional route of a years long journey through the guts of art school. Much like the juxtapositions examined in his work, his career has seen him transition from a business school education, to tattooing, and now finally for the past years to canvas. Based in Berlin since 2015, Moritz’s work as a revered tattoo artist takes him around the world, collecting perspectives and experiences, and permanently inscribing the skin of those that seek him out.
This constant movement and interaction with people from all walks of global life is a crucial element that is directly repurposed and translated via his work as a painter. Moritz’s work is a frenetic and hyperactive exploration of the many facets of humankind, language and both societal and global issues.
Unsullied by art-school stuffiness, his paintings preserve an honesty and purity afforded only to those without prior influence. Rather than burying the focus, his work is a mirror that sincerely exhibits case-studies of society and what it means to be a citizen of this current edition of civilisation.
That is not to say his work is simple. It is not. Moritz’s paintings are rich in “unseen” detail. A deliberate challenge, directly propositioned by the artist himself to the viewer. His work is a gift to the hunter of discreet detail. Unlocking his work will afford the viewer a unique perspective that can only be gained by taming one’s attention span.
Dedicating time to the observation of Moritz’s work allows the viewer to explore a world rich in generational differences, injustices, political-chaos and questions of privilege. One medium of choice which features heavily in his work, the ballpoint pen, directly links his practice to one of humanity’s most natural yet complex forms of expression: language and the written word. In practice, language functions as a non-physical border, but a border nonetheless, and here in Moritz’s work you the the viewer may be confronted by this invisible omnipresent barrier. Perhaps you will feel what it means to be locked outside, on the other side of the fence, unable to comprehend. On the other hand, perhaps you will feel the reality of language as an acquired advantage, that allows the bearer to understand more of the world and society around them. A sensation that can be both inclusive in its presence, or very isolating in its absence.
As a response to this phenomena, Moritz Lindur has crafted a visual language very much his own. A language that enables the viewer to see everything, or nothing at all.
